Surfing the Numbes

it was black.  the wave rolled over my head and dragged me through the coral reef, scratching my face and arm, hands and head.  The bruises would be severe, and a week later Jedediah Paulson was barely able to lift his arms above his head.   This was not the first time Jedediah took to a crushing blow in the ocean, and it would not be the last.

First thing I checked was my watch.   It was on my left wrist, of course, where it always was.  It read 5.32, and the sunlight slowly started to creep through the trees.
